Research Paper #1

In the year 2009 a certain theme was being followed. Maxim magazine helped promote the
theme of traditional masculinity to men. The traditional definition of masculinity includes
attributes such as independence, pride, resiliency, self control and physical strength. I personally think that this definition has a double bind meaning that a person is required to follow two contradicting requirements.

In Maxim magazine I found an article called "What Happens??" which was about a man named
Christian asking Maxim what will happen if he took steriods but didn't work out? Maxim
magazine encouraged him not to take steriods and explained to him that if he wanted a fit body
he should get it "the old fashion way" by working out. It also tells him the consquences on taking
steriods such as acne, and liver failure. This article shows that Maxim is encouraging traditional
masculinity because its telling men to work out and be a strong men like what a traditional man
would be like and to not take the easy route.

I found an article on Maxim's website that I thought related well to my thesis on the theme of
traditional masculinity. The article entitled Maxim's Style Guide: to Shave Properly by William Buckley teaches men how to simply use a razor to
shave instead of the extra use of creams and oils. Within the article i caught the phrase "How real
men use to do it" refering to an old fashion way of living. It goes on to explain to me that simply
wetting the beard and a fresh blade will do the trick for a fresh clean shave.

According to traditional masculinity men were seen as the provider and hunters of the family.
After, reading a special January issue of Maxim I discovered an article entitled "Kill Your Way
To Happiness" where Ted Nugget tells Maxim about his time as a U.S. Marine and how to helps
him hunt for food. He goes on to explain that being a former marine helps him get use to
weather conditions and how it makes it easier to hunt for food. "The family loves the fresh Boar"
he tells Maxim. That quote supports the theme of traditional masculinity.

In history men have been stereotyped as alcoholics and apparently being "best friends with the
bottle". In an article I found called "The 99 Best Bottles(and Cans) On Earth" it list the best beers
a man should drink. This type of exposure does not help removes people's mentality that men
are simply hunters and alcoholics. The article goes on by saying that men do not drink beers with
feminine names or a feminine like appearance.

To further my research on traditional masculinity i discovered an article describing how
ethnicity affects masculinity. I believe this aspect is true considering that different ethnicities
have different beliefs that can conflict within itself similar to that of the definition of traditional
masculinity. According to Ethnic Belonging dominance is a key trait within the different
ethnicities.

I also found an article for my secondary source and it was based on how masculinity impacts
adolescent males in heterosexual relationships. I believe this goes along greatly with my research
because it proves the idea that traditional masculinity brings about ideas to adolescent males and
how the conflicting definition can confuse them.

Maxim Magazine has been using traditional masculinity as their theme in the year 2009. They
have tried to influence men into traditional masculinity by using the encouragement of alcohol,
and telling them to hunt like a predator. I don’t think men should follow this traditional way of
life because I feel like we live in a new era and men should express themselves in their own way
as suppose to following someone else’s life style

1. Redablo,Christian. “What Happens If I Use Steriods But Don’t Exercise?”. Maxim Magazine(Special Issue Young Hollywood)(January 2009) page 23.Print

In the article Christian Rebaldo asks Maxim Magazine what the side effects of taking steroids are if he does not work out. The answer that was given to him were the following:horrific acne, liver damage, teensy testicles, and “roid rage” and it is highly recommended throughout the article for him not to take steroids.
As being a part of Maxim magazine this article is a relevant source for this project. It shows my thesis on how Maxim magazine supports traditional masculinity. One reason for it being relevant is because the article shows the reasons for Christian to not only be steroid free but encourages him if he wants to have a nice body that he should work out and get it the old fashion way.

2. Satoshi. “The Drinking Man’s Guide To Beer: The 99 Best Bottles(and Cans on Earth). Maxim Magazine(Special Issue Young Hollywood)(January 2009)pages 58-62. Print/Photography

In the article Satoshi uses a lot of photography along with informative details of drinks to shows what the best 99 drinks that men should drink. The article goes through all 99 drinks and also uses opinions from other people.
The article fully supports my thesis because of the title alone. It states the drinks that traditional men should drink. For example none of the beverages have weird exotice names like margarita or mimosa.

3. Nuget, Ted. ”Kill Your Way To Happiness”. Maxim Magazine(Special Issue Young Hollywood)(January 2009) page 67.Print

In this article Nuget talks about a hunting experience that he had and how being a former U.S. Marine helped him hunt and cope with weather conditions. He goes on to explaining how hunting for his own food makes him feel good and being a former marine helps him out while being in nature.
The article goes well with my thesis on traditional masculinity because it shows how a man goes hunting for his own food and provides for his family. Traditional masculinity shows how men are hard workers and how they are seen as the provider of the family.

4. Holiday Entertaining Guru. “You’ve Been Served”. Maxim Magazine.141. (December 2009).Website(http://www.maxim.com/stuff/hhe/85461/youve-been-served.html)

In this article it shows how drinking from a keg is manlier because men enjoy drinking. This goes along with my thesis because its giving off this traditional masculinity stereo type that men love to drink.

Blog Post 4 Final Draft

Masculinity the trait of behaving in ways considered typical for men. I believe in this generation

that defintion of masculinity has changed dramatically. When I look at ads ,commercials, and

movies I can see the change in masculinity. When I am not watching television or reading an ad I

noticed that some men do not live up to this definition of masculinity. In my opinion I think men

in this modern age have stepped more into metrosexuality. I believe that metrosexuality gives

men confidence but there are some advertisements that put down men in their new found

confindence. I've noticed all of the pressure that men take on in order for them to live up to the

metrosexual image. One ad that shows this new metrosexual era is a Rocawear ad that

I stumbled upon in a men's magazine called "King ". The Rocawear shows the three necessary

items a man needs in order to obtain the metrosexual look. This ad gives off the subliminal

message of metrosexuality because the ad shows that men need sunglasses, sneakers, and jeans

when according to traditional masculinity men are not suppose to care about appearances and it

is considered feminine.

Rocawear is a very well known designer company that usually makes clothing for men.

It was created in 1999 by Roc-A-Fella records cofounders Jay-Z and Damon Dash. Rocawear

produces this image that men should follow. In time men let themselves head towards

metrosexuality. Each and everyone of Rocawears designs all have the logo"RW" imprinted

multiple times. This makes the consumer look like a walking advertisement for Rocawear.

In their new collection Rocawear has designed a new line of jeans that suggests men to purchase

them so then they can get women. According to traditional masculinity men are not suppose to

care about their appearance but in this Rocawear ad they are promoting that men should care.

In the image the jeans are blown up to maximum porportion to catch the consumers eye. The j

jeans are complimented by the gold backround to send a message that the wearer of the jeans

can feel wealthy and powerful. But with designers like Rocawear it takes more than one new pair

of jeans to complete "the look".

On the second page of the Rocawear ad we see three pairs of sunglasses. These glasses are

three different colors red, blue and silver but they are all complimented with gold metal on them.

Like the jeans the backround of the sunglasses are gold which also gives off the same message of

wealth and power. Usually sunglasses are worn to prevent people from seeing you but in this

metrosexual image sunglasses are worn to make people look at you but not really see you so

clearly. The glasses also give off the message that they are the second essiential item to

becoming a real man. What people are unaware of is another hidden message which is men must

spend more money to become apart of "the look".

The final essential item to become a real man is on the third page which has Rocawear's new

sneaker. The sneaker is blown up to maximum porportion to fit the entire page. The sneaker is

black and red and like the other images the backround is gold. The message being sent in this

image is that the sneaker is them last item a man would need to become the man of any women's

dream. I also think its saying that without the purchase of all three items no man can look the

way the public wants to view them.

I believe metrosexuality does give men alot of confidence in appearance. But I also think being

emotional and body conscious is due to the fact that the media puts out this image that all of us

men should look a certain way. With all the negativitey the media puts into our minds I believe

that it goes hand and hand with self confidence. With critisism it helps some men bring out their

best but for some it ruins them. With this analysis on one ad from Rocawear I strongly believe

that metrosexuality is the new masculinity.
