Men aren't usually seen being very close with each other unless they were homosexual. But in this modern day heterosexual men have developed great bromantic relationships with one another. A bromance is a non-sexual relationship between two men that are unusually close. The concept of bromance can mostly be seen in the media; in movies such as Superbad, and I Love You Man. Bromancing is a positive to masculinity in terms of relationships amongst other men. Bromances can help men in having relationships and learning how to trust someone as well as having someone to help them with in case they have a problem.

Bromantic relationships can usually help men in creating a strong close bond amongst one another..In the movie Superbad Michael Cera's character Evan and Jonah Hill's character Seth have a bromantic relationship. In their relationship they give each other advice on how to get girls at a party they attend. The two characters discover that they need each other in their lives by admitting that they were going to miss one another after they graduate high school which leads them into using the term "I Love You". This shows that men in bromantic relationships gain an amount of trust and creates a close bond between the two. It also shows that the two boys feel comfortable to talk to one another about uncomfortable topics like sex and virginity as well as other topics they can't talk to no one else about. Those are key factors that the two boys benefit from their bromantic relationship.

In an article by Eric Anderson entitled “I Kiss Them Because I Love Them”: The Emergence of Heterosexual Men Kissing in British Institutes of Education”, men have shown their confidence by becoming close with one another. Many people would view this man on man bond as homosexuality but bromancing helps men depend and trust in one another and in this case become more comfortable with their sexuality. This is also seen in the movie Superbad. The characters feel compfortable by admitting that they love each other. This supports the fact that bromances help men create close bonds. The men in this article are simply trying to prove that bromancing is a positive and how it can also boost ones confidence. It also change what Anderson claims from Kimmel that “Heterosexual masculinity has long maintained hegemonic dominance in Western Europe and North American culture(Kimmel 1980(page2)).”
Bromantic relationships usually help when it comes to advice but it also helps heterosexual men with their relationship with women. An example of this is the movie I Love You Man. In the movie Paul Rudd's character Peter learns how to stop being a pansy and becomes more open and outgoing when he meets Jason Segel's character Sydney. In the movie Peter has no male friends so his brother sets him up on man dates and eventually he meets Sydney. Sydney shows Peter new ways of living and helps him strengthen his relationship with his fiance. This shows that men in bromantic relationships can work together to make sure that their women are happy with them. It also makes sure they do right by them which is also a plus for women.

Although building confidence amongst men bromancing also one key positive thing. It teaches men how to make friends which is also shown in the movie I Love You Man. In an article from Readers Digest by William Speed Weed entitled "The Secrets of Male Friendship" The article William Speed Weed explains that “intimacy was usually for women and men were too out of touch with their feelings for most of the 20th century men are emotional. They disclose weakness and build trust((Kimmel)Page1). It is said that males do more things together as suppose to talking on the phone. Men learn how to become more dedicated if they want a friendship to last because it can easily end in an instant if their relationship isn't good.

Bromance, a non-sexual relationship between two men that are unusually close. Bromancing is a positive thing in society. As it has been proven within the media and articles bromancing effects people’s lives and helps develop social skills. It also breaks the barrier for men to become closer and allows them to overcome that stereotype that becoming "close" is just feminine

Annotated Biblpgraphy for Research Paper 2

I Love You Man.John Hamburg.DreamWorks.2009.Paul Rudd, Jason Segel.

I Love You Man is a movie about Paul rudd's character Peter getting married to his fiance and is need of finding a best friend because he lacks any male companions. Throughout the movie Peter goes to a few "man dates" and eventually meets Jason Segel's character Sydney. The two become good friends and later on have a falling out which results to them making up in the end. The relationship between Peter and Sydney goes along with my topic because it shows how bromancing helps strengthn heterosexual relationship. for example, in the movie Peter and Sydney hang out a couple of times and they begin to both grow from each other. In Peter's case he learns to stop being a pansy and helps him have an even better relationship with his fiance and in Sydney's case he learns how to be more mature.

This a very usefull source for my topic also due to the fact that the name of the movie is I Love You Man which says alot about the movie. I think this movie is a objective source and this source goes along greatly with another one of my sources because they are both media based.

This source fits in to my research paper because it shows my point of bromancing is a positive. This helps my arguement because the entire movie shows and proves the positives in bromantic relationships. This source helps me does not change my mind but only proves my point even more.

Superbad. Greg Mottola.Colombia Pictures.2007. Michael Cera, Jonah Hill.

Superbad is a teen comedy revolving around two best friends in their senior year of highschool and their main goal is to lose there viriginities before they graduate and go off to college. This movie is related to my topic because the movie focuses on the bromantice relationship between Michael Cera's charcter Evan and Jonah Hill's character Seth. It shows how they need each other and it they learn how they strengthen their friendship by admiting to each other that they are going to miss each other since they will be attending different colleges which leads them into telling each other "I Love You".

Eric Anderson.“I Kiss Them Because I Love Them”: The Emergence of Heterosexual Men Kissing in British Institutes of Education. Department of Education, University of Bath, Bath, BA2 7AY, UK. 22 October 2010.

The online article is about the heterosexual relationships between men in the United kingdom and how they begin to grow comfortable around each other forming a kind of bromance. This goes along with my topic because the article list some activities and behaviors of the heterosexual men. For example the the men become comfortbale to have non homosexual kisses and some result in "engagement".

Quick Write

In responce to the picture i agree that men should not have maternal relationship with their children but at the same they should not resort to just giving money annd considering that as an act of love. I think that teachers the father that he is able to buy his child's love and that he barely has to do anything to be a real dad.

Alcoholic, Beastly, Dominant, Prideful, these are a few stereotypes that people think of when it

comes to men. Well at least when it comes to a traditional man. People of course think these

stereotypes are true especially with help from the media and ads in magazines. It looks like every

year a different masculinity is used to promote a theme for a magazine. In the year 2009 Maxim

magazine did its research and constructed a years worth of brain washing material. Maxim

magazine helped promote the theme of traditional masculinity to men in 2009. The traditional

definition of masculinity includes attributes such as independence, pride, resiliency, self control

and physical strength. I personally think that this definition has a double bind meaning that a

person is required to follow two contradicting requirements. It’s nearly impossible to do two

contradictory things at the same time. In the case of Maxim, they use their articles to reset men’s

brains to follow traditional masculinity because it is the latest trend. I gathered up a couple of

issues of Maxim magazine from the year 2009 and went on the official Maxim website to search

for articles to help support my thesis that traditional masculinity was the theme of that year

Maxim Magazine uses suggest that men should be fit and work out to support their theme of

traditional masculinity in 2009. In a January issue of Maxim magazine I found an article by

Christian Rebaldo entitled "What Happens?" which was about a man named Christian asking the

editors of Maxim on what would happen if he had took steroids but didn't work out? The editors

of Maxim encouraged him not to take steroids and explained to him that if he wanted a fit body

he should get it "the old fashion way" by working out. With that one statement “the old fashion

way” Maxim refers to traditional masculinity. Even though in this situation traditional
masculinity is the right approach it seems like Maxim uses this as a way to persuade their male

readers that traditional masculinity is the right masculinity and it will help you obtain a better life

knowing that you were able to do yourself.

Maxim also suggest that men should groom themselves in a more hunter like way as suppose to

using cosmetics after grooming. I found an article on Maxim's website that supports the fact that

Maxim was using traditional masculinity in 2009. The article by William Buckley entitled

“Maxim's Style Guide: to Shave Properly” teaches men how to simply use a razor to shave

instead of the extra use of creams and oils. Within the article I caught the phrase "How real men

use to do it" referring to an old fashion way of living. Maxim again uses another phrase referring

to traditional masculinity to teach their male reader that it is very manly not to use oils soaps and

other cosmetics when they can just use water and a clean blade. This article also uses the

subliminal message that a clean shave will attract females and it this process will work if the man

doesn’t smell pretty after the shave.

According to traditional masculinity men were seen as the provider and hunters of the family.

After, reading a special January issue of Maxim I discovered an article by Ted Nugget entitled

"Kill Your Way To Happiness" where Ted Nugget tells Maxim about his time as a U.S. Marine

and how to helps him hunt for food. He goes on to explain that being a former marine helps him

get use to weather conditions and how it makes it easier to hunt for food. "The family loves the

fresh Boar" he tells Maxim. Maxim for the third time now uses a quote to promote traditional

masculinity. It gives off the message that perhaps women like a man that can be like the

traditional man and is able to provide for their families.

To further investigate this method of traditional men and being “hunters” I had looked into

this topic of males being viewed as the dominant one of the family as well as being viewed as the

provider of the family and came across an online article by Jose M. Abreu entitled “ Ethnic

Belonging and Traditional Masculinity Ideology Among African Americans, European

Americans and Latinos”. The article shows that masculinity is affected by ethnicity and how in

different ethnicities some men are viewed as dominant and the provider of the family and in

some other ethnicities men and women share power. According to the article European

Americans show this trait of dominance and provider type more than any other ethnicity

mentioned in the article.

In history men have been stereotyped as alcoholics and apparently being "best friends with the

bottle". In a January issue of Maxim magazine I found an article by Satoshi called "The 99 Best

Bottles(and Cans) On Earth" it listed the best beers a man should drink. This goes back to the

stereotype that men are just alcoholics. With articles such as this one it does not help men

remove this alcoholic image. Instead Maxim magazine uses this to encourage men and their

friends to feed into the stereotype and chug their way to traditional masculinity.

To support this male bonding activity of drinking I searched up traditional masculinity and

male bonds and I discovered an article by Joesph H. Pleck entitled ” Masculinity Ideology: Its

Impact On Adolescent Male’s Heterosexual Relationships”. This article describes how

adolescents can easily be manipulated and the affect traditional masculinity has on them. The

idea of male bonding and drinking is one of the stereotypes of traditional masculinity.

Traditional masculinity puts the idea into their heads that they can have multiple sexual relations

and have unprotected to sex to certify their masculinity.

Maxim Magazine has been using traditional masculinity as their theme in the year 2009. They

have tried to influence men into traditional masculinity by using the encouragement of alcohol,

and telling them to hunt like a predator. I don’t think men should follow this traditional way of

life because I feel like we live in a new era and men should express themselves in their own way

as suppose to following someone else’s life style.
